John Calvin on “before me”: “To increase the indignity, God being provoked to jealousy whenever we substitute our fictions in his stead…warns them that they cannot adopt strange gods without his being witness and spectator of the sacrilege…The glory of his Godhead must be maintained entire and incorrupt, not merely by external profession, but as under his eye, which penetrates the inmost recesses of his heart” (Institutes, 2.8.16)

That for the sake of my very salvation I avoid and flee all idolatry, witchcraft, superstition, and prayer to saints or to other creatures. Further, that I rightly come to know the only true God, trust in him alone, submit to him with all humility and patience, expect all good from him only, and love, fear, and honor him with all my heart. In short, that I forsake all creatures rather than do the least thing against his will.

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer.

and him only shall you serve.’ ”
Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.” For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy;
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
Deuteronomy 6:2–5 (ESV)

Idolatry is having or inventing something in which to put our trust instead of, or in addition to, the only true God who has revealed himself in his Word.

For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God,
And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
The coming of Jesus has changed everything. We cannot speak about God any longer unless we speak of Him as the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. To worship any besides Jesus or to worship God except through Jesus is to commit idolatry. (Kevin DeYoung)
Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods. But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more?
Makikilala lang natin ang tunay na Diyos kung kikilalanin natin si Jesus. At mas makikilala natin siya kung bibigyang pansin natin ang Salita niya, ang Bibliya. At habang mas nakikilala natin siya, we love him. And if we love Jesus, we also love God. And if we love God we want to honor and worship him. We do that by honoring and worshipping Jesus. At kung nagtitiwala tayo kay Jesus, nagtitiwala din tayo sa Ama. If we follow Jesus as his disciples, we submit and obey God. Hangga’t lumalalim ang relasyon natin kay Jesus, mas nagiging mainit ang intimacy natin with God.
